My first realhorse.

Smokey was a small, black Quarter Horse that worked in the family hack string. When I turned four my mother allowed me to ride Smokey as a birthday present. These old photographs captured from home movies document that first experience and foretold my riding style as a young jumper. The movies show me tapping Smokey with the reins to make him go faster and faster! The fearless nature of my youth was evident even at age four.

After my successful birthday ride on a “real horse”, I had to break the bad new to my parents. “I can’t ride Tony anymore because he’s sick” I explained, “He just doesn’t grow!” Despite a full-time job guiding tourists through the Pocono Mountain trails, I considered Smokey to be my horse until first grade.
